Abstract

Mathematics is a key subject that helps develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, which are crucial for both academic and real-life success. This study set out to explore what affects the math performance of Grade 4 students in Montalban District, Montalban, Rizal, Philippines. It examined factors related to students, such as their interests and study habits, as well as factors related to teachers, such as their personality traits, teaching skills, and the materials they use. This study used a descriptive quantitative design and involved 20 Grade 4 math teachers chosen through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson r correlation. The results showed that teacher-related factors, especially teaching skills and personality traits, had a strong positive impact on students' math performance. However, students' study habits were found to be weak and in need of improvement. Students also face significant challenges in understanding mathematical language, fractions, and geometry concepts. Additionally, there were significant links between the influencing factors and the problems encountered, as well as between teaching practices and students' math performance. However, no significant differences were found when the respondents were grouped by their profiles. The study concludes that to improve math performance, it is important to strengthen teaching practices, enhance instructional materials, and encourage better study habits and interest among students to achieve better learning outcomes.
