Abstract

Ang balbal ay itinuturing na mababang antas ng wika at mga salitang ginagamit sa pang-araw-araw na pakikipagkomunikasyon. Bagama’t malawan na itong tinalakay ng mga iskolar, nananatiling limitado ang karamiha sa mga naunang pag-aaral sa dalawang henersayon. Dahil dito, hindi lubusang naipapaliwanag ang dinamikong paggamit ng balbal sa apat na henersayon sa Pilipinas. Layunin ng pag-aaral na tasahin ang pagkakaiba sa antas ng intelligibility ng balbal sa Henerasyon X, Millennials, Gen Z, at Gen Alpha. Gumamit ito ng deskriptibong sarbey at 2-stage cluster sampling na may 384 kalahok mula sa 26 komunidad sa Naval, Biliran. Naging saligan din ang teaoryang Sosyolingguwistik at Akomodasyon at sinuri ang datos gamit ang Excel at SPSS. Natuklasang mataas ang intelligibility ng Gen Z (M=91.3) at Millennials (M=87.9), mababa sa Gen Alpha (M=40.8), at pinakamababa sa Gen X (M=22.3). Ipinakita ng Kruskal-Wallis test na may makabuluhang pagkakaiba sa intelligibility sa pagitan ng mga henerasyon (p < .001). Sa post hoc Mann-Whitney U test, walang makabuluhang pagkakaiba sa pagitan ng Millennials at Gen Z (p=.101), ngunit makabuluhan ang lahat ng iba pang pares (p<.001). Ipinapakita ng mga resulta ang malinaw na agwat sa intergenerational na komunikasyon at pangangailangan para sa angkop na estratehiyang pang-edukasyon upang mapaunlad ang pag-unawa sa nagbabagong balbal. Inirerekomenda ang pag-aaral sa impluwensya ng kulturang popular at social media sa akwisisyon at enkulturasyon ng balbal partikular na ng mas bata at mas nakatatandang henerasyon, ang henerasyon Alpha at X. Mainam ding gumamit ng ibang lapit at pamamaraan upang mapunan ang metodolohikal na limitasyon ng kasalukuyang pag-aaral.

Jeson Viñas, Biliran Province State University

Jeson V. Viñas is an Instructor I in the School of Teacher Education at Biliran Province State University. Since 2021, he has served as Director of the university’s Center for Language and Culture (Sentro ng Wika at Kultura). His research interests encompass Philippine languages, literature, translation, and cultural studies. He earned a Master of Arts in Education from Cebu Normal University in 2024 and is presently a Doctor of Philosophy student at Philippine Normal University.
