Abstract

The hospitality industry is fundamentally service-oriented, making both academic preparation and workplace readiness critical to graduate employability. As Hospitality Management (HM) graduates enter an increasingly competitive labor market, questions remain regarding the relative importance employers place on educational credentials and practical competence during hiring. This study examined employer perceptions of HM graduates by comparing the influence of these two factors on employability assessments. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, the study surveyed employers from full-service restaurants in Cubao, Quezon City. Respondents represented diverse organizational positions, levels of industry experience, restaurant classifications, and professional backgrounds. A validated survey questionnaire measured perceptions of educational credentials, including degree attainment, academic performance, certifications, and curriculum relevance, as well as practical competence, encompassing on-the-job training, work experience, soft skills, digital literacy, and school reputation. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were employed to interpret the data. Findings showed that employers considered both educational credentials and practical competence important in evaluating HM graduates. Educational credentials received a verbal interpretation of “Agree,” while practical competence was rated “Strongly Agree,” indicating a slightly stronger positive perception. However, inferential analysis revealed no statistically significant difference between the two factors. Although practical competence obtained a higher descriptive rating, employers did not significantly prioritize it over educational credentials. The results suggest that employers value a balanced combination of academic qualifications and practical abilities. Educational credentials serve as indicators of foundational knowledge and discipline, whereas practical competence reflects graduates’ readiness to perform effectively in workplace settings. The absence of a significant difference highlights that employability is influenced by the combined contribution of both factors. Therefore, higher education institutions should strengthen curriculum-industry alignment through experiential learning opportunities, structured training programs, and soft skills development to enhance graduates’ employability.
