Emerging Hybrid Pedagogical Framework from Gay Gendered Performance and Psychological Defense Mechanisms in Lamyos

Using qualitative content analysis guided by the lens of Gender Performativity Theory and the lens of psychological defense mechanisms, selections from Lamyos, a volume of queer-themed Philippine fictions in prose edited by J. Neil C. Garcia, were analyzed to determine the gay gendered performances of the gay characters, the psychological defense mechanisms used and their impact on gender identity and sexuality, and an emerging pedagogical framework for the critical analysis of gay-themed Philippine prose fiction in English. Regarding gay gendered performance, it was found out that in many ways under sexual emotional involvements, gay characters perform their gender by engaging sexually with males and showing attraction with same-sex. In many ways under personal inclinations, gay characters perform their gender by living like a stereotypical feminine. In many ways under psychological and behavioral displays, gay characters perform their gender by engaging femininely with others. The study found that many gay characters in Philippine gay-themed fiction in prose use various psychological defense mechanisms, such as fantasy, projection, identification, sublimation, displacement, repression, intellectualization, reaction formation, and denial impacting aspects of gender and sexuality. Combining these results led to the conceptualization of the emerging hybrid pedagogical framework known as ‘Tripartite Gay-gendered Psychoanalytical Pedagogical Framework’ that uses deductive top-down approach in the analysis of gay-themed Philippine prose fiction using sub-frame which is operationally defined as a combination of queer character trait plus the appropriate psychological defense mechanism(s). The study recommends the adoption of the pedagogical framework and its refinement by including larger corpus.
